At 2 AM on August 24, 1953, George Wellington Van Tassel was sleeping outside the Giant Rock in the Mojave Desert with his first wife*, Eva, when 3 extraterrestrials woke him up. The leader, Solganda, spoke English and convinced George to take a ride on the flying saucer parked nearby. Onboard, George encountered three additional extraterrestrials who communicated telepathically in “Omnibeam,” as they were mutes. In total, George estimated that Solganda and the other men from Venus were on the ground for 20 minutes. George took a flight on their saucer, and it was the first and only time he saw them. This encounter started George’s life work: the Integratron.

The Integratron is a 16-sided all-wood dome structure with 16 small windows built without nails, screws, or any metal (joinery). Van Tassel used Douglas fir to create glulam (glued laminate wood) ribs connected with dowel beams. These beams were designed to spin the structure and generate electrostatic energy in order to facilitate time travel and to act as a rejuvenation machine that would extend the human life to 300-1500 years. According to Solganda, the largest hurdle facing humans was our limited life expectancy. If we could live longer, we could accomplish so much more. Unfortunately, George would not live to see the Integratron completed.

George W. Van Tassel was a Ufologist, writer, and self-ordained minister. Born in Ohio on March 12, 1910, George dropped out of high school but had a fascination with aircraft. He ventured out to Yuma, Arizona, where he married his first wife Eva Meek on January 31, 1932. They settled in California. Together with their three daughters, the Van Tassel family moved out to the Giant Rock in 1947.

The Giant Rock is a massive natural rock structure in the Mojave Desert. German American Frank Kritzer squatted under the rock and made it his home. The hermit believed there were glass-lined tunnels underneath the rock and attempted to locate while managing an emergency airstrip, often called an airport. (Note: See forthcoming blog on him) After Kritzer was blown up and killed on July 25, 1942, George and family took up residency and began running the airport.

George and Eva took advantage of the paranormal-friendly California landscape. They added the Come on Inn [sic] café, which served Eva’s famous hamburgers. On April 4, 1953, the 1st Annual Giant Rock Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention took place alongside the Giant Rock. From 1953-1977, hundreds to thousands of UFO enthusiasts ventured out to the desert, communing with like-minded people. The gatherings were popular yet a trigger point for one of Van Tassel’s neighbors.

People gathering for one of the UFO conventions held at the Giant Rock.

From 1954 and up until his death by a heart attack, Van Tassel was under the watchful eye of the FBI—all thanks to one of his neighbors. According to the unsealed, though redacted, FBI file, the Bureau checked in on Van Tassel sporadically of the years. Much of what we know about George comes from one such visit.

FBI Inspector Joseph Sizoo spoke with Eva and gleaned some background information on George. She informed Insp. Sizoo that George was three months shy of graduating from high school. Although George was not a pilot, he did hold a mechanics certificate. A lot of George’s employment history is hearsay and sketchy. However, we do know he was captivated with extraterrestrials.

The 3-4 story Integratron, located 3 miles south of the Giant Rock, was meant to be the hub of the 10-acre College of Universal Wisdom, which was part of the UFO cult Ministry of Universal Wisdom. Originally called the Brotherhood of Cosmic Christ, George’s church incorporated sermons from the Bible with extraterrestrial high thinking concepts. These weekly sermons actually legitimized George’s behavior and formed the basis of exoneration of anti-American activity.

Eva died on May 11, 1974, and by the time George died he was supposedly remarried to Dorris Andre Van Tassel. Dorris attempted to keep the church going after George’s death but ultimately sold the property in 1987 to Emile Canning and Diana Cushing, who held onto the property until 2000 when three sisters (Joanne, Nancy, and Patty Karl) purchased the property and transformed the dome into a healing center and sound bath.

Shortly after George’s death, all equipment aimed at reversing the aging process and facilitating time travel disappeared. No one has ever found the tunnels underneath the Giant Rock. And the Integratron has become a local tourist attraction for day trippers heading out into the desert. On April 23, 2018, the Integratron was added to the National Registry of Historic Places. Both the Giant Rock and the Integratron are ensconced in UFO lore and should be on your bucket road trip itinerary.

* I was unable to locate any official documents showing that George married Dorris in 1975. However, his obituary listed her as his surviving 2nd wife. His Find-A-Grave page only identifies Eva as his wife.

Personality Traits of Alien Abductees, a.k.a. Experiencers

5 traits, Experiencers

An illustration of a body rising into a UFO on a beam of light.

Richard J. McNally, PhD shared the results on a limited research study awaiting publication in Journal of Experimental Psychopathology titled “Explaining ‘Memories’ of Space Alien Abduction and Past Lives: An Experimental Psychopathology Approach.” He and his team identified five (5) personality traits among “experiencers,” people who were supposedly abducted by extraterrestrial lifeforms. Although they could not confirm or ascertain whether all or most traits needed to be present, McNally felt that any experiencer would exhibit at least one trait. The traits were: 1. Affliction of sleep paralysis accompanied with hallucinations upon waking; 2. Ability to recall false memories; 3. Prone to high levels of Absorption; 4. Believing in New Age ideology; and 5. Extensive knowledge of other experiencer stories. After reading the notes given at an address before the World Behavioral & Cognitive Therapies in Boston, Mass., June 4, 2010, I can attest that the study was by far too limited and deeply biased.

5 Traits

  1. Sleep Paralysis Followed by Hallucinations upon Waking. The researchers collected stories from participants who experienced sleep paralysis and began to hallucinate. Sleep paralysis is the inability to move limbs while one is conscious. It causes anxiety. The researchers found that the experiencers would begin to hallucinate seeing lights and feeling sensations.
  2. Recall False Memories. Researchers conducted memory recovery sessions with experiencers. At these times, leading questions were utilized to elicit narratives. Some of the stories were not authentic. False Memory Syndrome (FMS) is when pseudo-memories of traumatic events are proffered as possible real-life events. People who are highly susceptible are at risk of turning the suggestion into a false memory.
  3. High Levels of Absorption. Absorption is a term used for people who are prone to fantastical thinking and vivid imagery. They are highly susceptible and embellish stories.
  4. Belief in the New Age Movement. The New Age Movement encompasses a lot of different thinking and activities. Among the most popular are fortune telling; tarot card readings; alternative medicine; astrology; and belief in ghosts.
  5. Extensive Knowledge of Past Abduction Stories. The study claims that most experiencers knew a lot about other alien abduction stories and histories.

The author premised that the participants, 10 in all, appeared sane yet sincerely believed that they were abducted by extraterrestrials.

While the traits may be used to classify types of experiencers, it falls flat in execution. There were 10 experiencers involved in the study. There simply were not enough participants.

Next, the author was clear that there was not one magic combination of traits to identity an experiencer. Whew, because I can identify with 3 and can attest that I’ve never been abducted. Therefore, this is not a foolproof classification system.

While administering the memory recovery sessions, the author shared an anecdotal story on how it was difficult to record short narratives because the team kept laughing. None on the team seemed open to the idea of alien abductions. They conducted the research already settling on the outcome. This is a major error in academic research.

Finally, since the researchers had already passed judgement and deemed these stories false, there was no way established to verify if they could have happened. The author flat out states that no serious professional would believe alien abductions occur; therefore, he was conducting research to find out why people who looked sane were, in fact, not. That’s not research, my friend.

However, a facet of the research may be able to shed light on experiencers and their abduction stories. More research should be conducted in sleep paralysis. Memory recovery sessions should be conducted by professionals who are not biased or use leading questions. There is much to learn from the 10+ years since McNally addressed his peers. Let’s ensure it’s constructed with proper protocols that include cross-discipline researchers. And maybe, just maybe, look toward the successful academics who have come out stating their belief that we are not alone.

Unpacking the Rendlesham Forest UFO Conspiracy

On December 26, 1980, U.S. military personnel stationed in Great Britain reported seeing strange, unaccountable lights in Rendlesham Forest. By 1983, the incident made front-page news and coined the “British Roswell.” Several theories about the origins of the lights have floated around for decades. A new book by British UFO researcher Nick Redfern examines the possibility that what was seen was a coordinated military hallucinatory experiment.

The Rendlesham Forest UFO Conspiracy: A Close Encounter Exposed as a Top Secret Government Experiment (Lisa Hagan Books) was released last month and considers that the incident was a controlled government experiment. Redfern discussed the book and how he came to this conclusion on The Midnight Society Internet radio show on Wednesday. June 3rd.

Previous theories included lights from a nearby lighthouse, holograms, abnormal atmospheric conditions, and military testing. The incident was deemed credible when U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Charles Halt penned a memo dated January 13, 1981 that was released under the US Freedom of Information Act in 1983. The memo was never ruled as classified information. Halt recorded observations during the December 27-28, 1980 investigation by military personnel. The U.K. Ministry of Defence declassified the tape, and it is posted in the public domain online.

The Forestry Commission acted upon interest in the sightings and used lottery funds to establish a UFO Trail in 2005, https://www.forestryengland.uk/rendlesham-forest/ufo-trail-rendlesham-forest. In 2014, the commission paid for a sculpture to be erected at the end of the trail.

Redfern’s theory is fascinating. Tune in to the saved interview by visiting Midnight.fm.

Project Blue Book Adds Roswell to the Story

History Channel’s popular Project Blue Book kicked off Season 2 on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 examining the Roswell, New Mexico UFO sighting. The incident is known as the “Roswell Incident.” To be clear, the infamous organization never investigated Roswell.

In 1995, the GAO (General Accounting Office) published The Roswell Report: Fact vs. Fiction in the New Mexico Desert. The Air Force led the multi-agency investigation. The conclusion was that there wasn’t a government cover-up nor did a UFO land in the area. Further, the report supported the well-known theory that a weather balloon crashed in the desert (https://www.archives.gov/research/military/air-force/ufos). Admittedly, UFO enthusiasts were not pleased.

Americans’ views on UFO sightings have remained consistent since 1996. According to the 2019 Gallup poll, 33% of Americans believe UFOs have visited Earth. However, only 16% have witnessed a UFO. Interestingly, 56% believe that those who have seen a UFO did, in fact, see something and were not imagining or hallucinating. An overwhelming 75% believe life exists on other planets. However, “life” does not necessarily equate to extraterrestrial creatures.

UFO-themed TV shows and movies are plentiful, and Project Blue Book capitalizes on that interest. Project Blue Book showcases the work of Dr. J. Allen Hynek. (See https://thehauntedlibrarian.com/2019/02/05/5-facts-about-dr-j-allen-hynek-and-project-blue-book/ for more information on Hynek). Entering the second season, the show focused on Roswell, the number one travel destination to UFO believers. The crash in Roswell occurred in July 1947, 6 years before Project Blue Book formed. The project ran from 1952-1969. Show creator David O’Leary is giving screen time to go back to the beginning in American UFO lore. He’s hoping to bridge Roswell with Hynek’s participation. Hopefully, the series will maintain Hynek’s credibility and tone down the theatrics.

Project Blue Book airs Tuesdays at 10 PM EST on the History Channel. It will debut in the United Kingdom on Syfy Channel at 9 PM on March 12th.

Last week, the Breakthrough Listen Initiative released the largest data dump of audio files of space noise collected through a $100 million project commitment. The program seeks to open access to the data and to encourage the public to assist in combing through the extensive data. Founded in 2015 by billionaire couple Yuri and Julia Milner, the organization seeks to identify extra-terrestrial life. According to its website, “It is by far the most comprehensive, intensive and sensitive search ever undertaken for artificial radio and optical signals.”

While economists were huddled at the annual Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming last week, others were watching a couple of YouTube videos shot on August 11th, the week before the financial meeting. The video captures what some hope is a U.F.O. The video was filmed at Spring Creek Ranch around 3:41 AM. Click the link and watch the slowest white light cross from left to right across the screen. Immediately, it is discounted due to its lack of speed. The article clarifies that the video is shot at low speed, one frame per second. The clip is roughly 3 minutes long. Scroll down to the sped up version. Either way, both are unconvincing. Let the conspiracy theories begin.

Twin Orbs Filmed Over Kansas City

Clint Banning filmed 2 and half minutes of twin white orbs floating in the sky. The large balloons were incredibly high in the sky. Banning published the video on June 20.

View here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExfefIOyd2E

The Weather Channel edited the video and added comments and observations: https://weather.com/news/trending/video/strange-sighting-over-kansas-city-sets-off-wave-of-speculation

The sincerity in Banning’s voice and the running commentary from his friends and neighbors add to the video viewing experience.

Although the US government has not commented, there’s most likely a reason for the balloons. Some YouTube users hoped for faster rural Internet connections. The balloons are probably collecting data on weather and not of the extraterrestrial kind. However, the experience seemed positive for Banning and his guests.

Congress Briefed on U.F.O. Uptick

As previously reported, the US Navy continues to investigate credible U.F.O. sightings by military personnel. A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed to media outlets that interested members of Congress were briefed this week on potential threats to humans from unidentified flying objects. The focus remains pilot safety. Although Congress cut off funding in 2007, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program still pursues credible flight hazard threats. This runs the gamut from drones to extraterrestrial phenomena.

New York Times Reports Newly Disclosed UFO Sightings in 2015

Navy pilots witnessed and videotaped several encounters with unidentified flying objects while in the air or on military aircraft carriers. The reports were declassified and reported on by the award-winning newspaper. Seems UFO activity may have increased…well, certainly the reporting of such activity continues.

The May 27, 2019 article titled “Wow, What Is That?” profiles a series of UFO sightings by Navy pilots. Lt. Ryan Graves details the sightings occurring from the summer of 2014 to March 2015 off the East Coast of the United States. All sightings were reported to the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), the UFO tracking program begun in 2007 at the request of then Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). The program was funded from 2007-2012, when it ceased most operations. Reports of the program completely closing were exaggerated, as this blog and the New York Times article proves.

Lt. Graves described unknown aircraft flying 30,000 feet into the air and reaching hypersonic speeds. He and his mates were unable to locate any exterior engines and were stunned that the aircrafts remained in the sky for 12 hours. They followed procedures and reported their observations.

A small but largely significant fact came out of the article. Government officials, notably the Pentagon, boasted about the closure of the UFO tracking program noting that funding had been zero-lined, meaning the agency had not been allocated funds to continue. At the time, a few writers (myself included) read between the lines and reported that the agency would continue to collect and to investigate all sightings from military personnel. In light of possible funding for a Space Force, Congress needs to step up and re-fund AATIP.
