The Bye Bye Man: First Horror Film of 2017

Tagline: Don’t think it; don’t say it.

Time to blame the Ouija Board. Again. The Bye Bye Man (2017) debuts on Friday the 13th, January 2017. It is the first horror movie of 2017 (Amityville: The Awakening was moved from January 6 until June). The trailer portrays a menacing creature who is a cross between Candyman and Slender Man, two contrived characters to seem like an urban legend. The Bye Bye Man media package wants viewers to believe this is based on a true story. That would be a stretch.

Republished book cover.

Robert Damon Schneck published The President’s Vampire: Strange-But-True Tales of the United States of America, a collection of short tales, in 2005. It has been republished as The Bye Bye Man: And Other Strange-But-True Tales coinciding with the movie. The movie builds off of the short story “The Bridge to Body Island,” set in the 1990s when three college students move into a house and discover a cursed Ouija Board. Of course they begin to experiment with the board and eek out the story of an abandoned blind albino boy born in rural Louisiana and left on the stoop of an orphanage. The boy, ultimately known as “The Bye Bye Man,” escapes the orphanage traveling vagabond style leaving corpses in his wake. He pines for a “friend” and begins sewing eyes and a tongue together. The creature sets the “friend” down so it may identify the next victim. The doll whistles when a victim is found. The urban legend stops shortly after this and the movie presumably picks up the tale.

The trailer and brief write-ups describe the plot as a mesh of Ouija Board antics, tied to a creature who comes when his name is called or thought (hence the Candyman reference), photobombing pictures like Slender Man, and then leading to possession. Originally rated R, the movie is PG-13. The production budget is $6 million, making it a low-budget movie, but certainly not fatal for a horror movie. Stay tuned for my review after opening weekend. In the meantime…don’t think his name, nor dare say it.

Amityville: The Awakening—Release Date Postponed. Again

Originally announced to debut in 2012, Amityville: The Awakening (ATA) has been postponed. Again. This does not bode well for the film, part of the Amityville franchise. Production completed nearly 3 years ago and has endured 7 release date changes. Seven! If this movie does hit the theaters, save your money. The drama surrounding post-production is an indicator that this movie is a dud.

ATA comes 38 years after The Amityville Horror (1979) jolted theater-goers by claiming it was “based on a true story.” With a production budget of $4.7 million dollars, the movie made $86 million in the US alone. As a staple on cable TV stations, the movie continues to generate income. The 1970s ushered in a new form of horror movie: those loosely based on potentially true events. The budget for the 1973 The Exorcist was $12 million dollars. It raked in over $204 million in the United States alone. Likewise, it continues to generate income through cable TV revenue. Arguably, both movies were cutting edge and advanced the horror genre. Most importantly they came from incredibly popular books. Both films successfully bridged the text to celluloid. Although both stories claimed to be based on true events, the stories continue to unravel—more so with Amityville.

The Amityville franchise is successful. By keeping production budgets low, companies can produce a profitable film. This, in turn, leads to more sequels. Not all of them are as successful. This is the case with Amityville. Three motion picture sequels were not as successful. One barely broke even. But the “legend” surrounding the house endures. Unfortunately, it is time to shutter the house and move to a new location.

Initially titled Amityville: The Lost Tapes, this reboot occurs in the infamous Long Island home. The most alert viewer will notice some discrepancies, though. The house is a private residence located at 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville. After the film’s release throngs of tourists would linger in the yard. The owners successfully petitioned to change the address to 108 Ocean Avenue in the hopes of confusing tourists. The owners also made extensive renovations to the house so it would not resemble the house at 18 Brooks Road, Toms River, New Jersey, which was used to for filming. Most notably removed were the quarter pie-shaped windows, pretty much the most haunting feature.

amityville

The official movie trailer opens with the old house and lots of land around it. The real house sits on a densely populated street with a canal in the back. There is very little similarities between the two.

The story-line could stand on its own. The mental thoughts of “Kill, kill, kill” is the only visible link to the original movie. The producers should have created a new, fresh horror film franchise. I’ll have to wait until June to see it. That’s if 7 release date changes are the charm! Stay tuned!

Most Anticipated Horror Movie for Summer 2016 Is…

The Conjuring 2 premieres June 10th. The sequel to the immensely popular The Conjuring, which grossed over $137 million in the US alone, follows Ed and Lorraine Warren to London where they investigate the infamous “Enfield Hauntings.” Be warned: The sequel is merely influenced by the alleged poltergeist activity from 1977-1979.

The paranormal activity occurring in Enfield, UK transpired over a 2 year period. It involved a single mother, Peggy Hodgson, and two of her four children, Janet (age 11) and Johnny (age 10). On August 30, 1977, Janet and Johnny heard shuffling noises and saw the dresser slide across the floor. Thus began the UK’s most famous poltergeist story. The Enfield Poltergeist

The Enfield Poltergeist

The A & E Network featured the three-part mini-series The Enfield Haunting last year. The series performed quite well, opening with 750,000 U.K. viewers alone. It can been seen in the US, as well. It is a closer adaptation to published reports on what transpired back then and who was involved.

According to Guy Lyon Playfair of the Society for Psychical Research and who investigated the hauntings, the Warrens were not involved with the investigation and spent merely a day at the location. Not surprising. Hollywood likes to bend the truth.

How Well Did Poltergeist (2015) Perform?

Summer blockbusters usually open on Memorial Day Weekend. This year was no different with Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, with an astronomical budget of $190 million, opening. The reboot Poltergeist, modestly made for $35 million, opened to mixed reviews and sluggish theater-goers. So, how did it stack up?

Poltergeist had a solid fourth (4th) place finish when the weekend wrapped up. It took in $23 million and should recoup the production costs in its second week. Not too bad for a reboot of a seminal classic.

Remake versus Reboot

A remake is a modernization of a former work. In this case, a remake would be an updated version of an older film. Essentially, the goal is for the director to recreate the earlier film while enhancing the content. Characters, locations, plots are the same.

A reboot, on the other hand, is a re-envisioned new film utilizing the theme but not necessarily the finer details. Actually, the reboot may only share the same title as the original film.

Although Poltergeist has been touted as a remake, I would consider it a reboot. While the films draw on similar plotlines, the characters changed. The decade changed. Poltergeist (2015), the reboot, adds another episode into the Poltergeist (1982), original classic, franchise.

Haunting of Cellblock 11

Haunting of Cellblock 11

Haunting of Cellblock 11 Released on DVD with Bonus Features

Bonus features trump the ease of Video on Demand (VOD) purchases. And the Haunting of Cellblock 11 raises the stakes. Released last week, the Andrew P. Jones film includes two additional segments: the History of the Missouri State Penitentiary and a Director’s Commentary. Even though I purchased the digital copy, I have ordered the DVD just to get the bonus features.

The movie was filmed on location at the now closed Missouri State Penitentiary. Known as “the bloodiest 47 acres in America,” the prison operated from March 1836 to September 15, 2004. The prison housed male and female prisoners. Its history included riots, executions, and prison breaks. In addition, visitors have experienced unexplained paranormal phenomena. Visit the official Website, http://www.missouripentours.com/, for more information.

Also included in the DVD package is an on-going Commentary with Andrew and some of the actors. Andrew assures viewers that it is not the stuffy commentary feature other movies include. I cannot wait to view!

On a side note, this movie is NOT a “found footage” film. Found footage is a sub-genre of movie making where raw, unedited footage is assembled as the movie. Examples may be documentary films or collage films. It can be fictional or non-fictional. Basically the director uses film footage as a “found” object. Andrew did not use found footage for this movie. Further, all of the footage in the Haunting of Cellblock 11 was unique to the movie. This movie was filmed based on a script, which Andrew wrote.

I thoroughly enjoyed Haunting of Cellblock 11. It is a great horror movie. View it for what it is: an independent film shot on a low-budget. To review the movie otherwise does the film a disservice and reduces the writer’s credibility. Order your copy and make sure to watch the added features. I will!

Stanley Hotel Hedge Maze Winning Design

Winning design for the hedge maze at the Stanley Hotel.

And the Winner Is…

The Stanley Hotel gets a hedge maze. New York architect Mairim Dallaryan Standing’s hedge maze design was selected over 300+ entries. The hedge maze will be installed this spring to coincide with the annual Stanley Film Festival, April 30-May 3.

A hedge maze was a prominent feature in the 1980 movie The Shining. However, one never existed at the Stanley Hotel, inspiration for the fictional Overlook Hotel. Tourists repeatedly inquired on the location of the fictional hedge.

After 20 years of requests, the Grand Heritage Hotel Group announced the contest last November. Entries totaled 329 from 40 states and 32 countries. A 7-member panel selected the winner last week. The contest was a huge hit!

Standing wins 2 airline tickets, accommodations, and 2 all-access passes for the film festival. Book your tickets and experience the thrill of a large-scale maze.

The Stanley Hotel Hedge Maze Winner Announced Tomorrow

In celebration of 20 years of ownership of the Stanley Hotel, Stephen King’s inspiration for his spine chilling novel The Shining, the Grand Heritage Hotel Group held a contest: design a hedge maze. Tomorrow at 5:30 MST the winner will be announced.

A hedge maze was a key feature in The Shining (1980) movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. However, a hedge maze did not exist at the hotel. The movie was not filmed at the hotel but instead in England. Hedge mazes are incredibly popular. This maze will be constructed with 1,600-2,000 Alpine Currant bushes. It will be installed on the front lawn and will remain a permanent fixture on the grounds.

The contest generated nearly 400 entries from 40 odd countries. Originally set to unveil the winner today, the panel had to postpone the vote due to inclement weather. Stay tuned for an announcement.

Paranormal Activity’s “Haunted” Home For Sale (Maybe)

Paranormal Real Estate

The home used as the set for Paranormal Activity is for sale. The 4 bedroom 2 ½ bath home is listed for $749,000. The home is not haunted; however, it was the set for the first two movies in the popular franchise. Neighbors say that the home is really nice and assure reporters that there is nothing extraordinary paranormal about the house.

Nestled in the Ranchos Penasquitos neighborhood, the home features a pool and landscaped backyard. Owner Oren Peli, writer/director, filmed the first two installments of the PA franchise at the home. He specifically remodeled the home for the first movie.

With a deep discount budget of $15,000, the original Paranormal Activity grossed over $100 million dollars. The franchise remains popular. For those looking to buy a piece of horror movie history, look up this property. Buyer Beware: Ask the realtor for confirmation on paranormal history—or the lack thereof.
