October 7th: 3 Films Based on Real Stories

There are plenty of horror films and made-for-television adaptations of stories based on real events. Unfortunately, most of them do not make the cut. Others that may have stated they were based on real life events or inspired by real life stories didn’t make the cut either. The three motion pictures below are based on real events that were also published in books.

  1. The Amityville Horror (1977): Jay Anson wrote a book about a family over-mortgaged and experiencing strange events at their Amityville, NY home. The film’s credits stated: “This motion picture is based on the book The Amityville Horror. Certain characters and events have been changed to heighten dramatic effect.” So, yes, the film isn’t really, really what occurred; however, it makes for some white-knuckled moments. View the original and not the reboot or the sequels.
  2. The Conjuring (2013): In 1971, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren visited the family home of the Perron family. What ensues is a fight for the soul of the mother, Carolyn, played by Lili Taylor. Director James Wan created a popular franchise beginning with this horrifying dark tale.
  3. The Exorcist (1973): William Peter Blatty wrote The Exorcist based off the 1949 possession story of a teenage boy. Blatty changed some names and facts to hide the identity of the young man. Instead, his book focused on the demonic possession of Regan, played by Linda Blair. This film won Blatty an Oscar for his screenplay and forever cemented the image of pea soup in audience minds.

Most Anticipated Horror Movie for Summer 2016 Is…

The Conjuring 2 premieres June 10th. The sequel to the immensely popular The Conjuring, which grossed over $137 million in the US alone, follows Ed and Lorraine Warren to London where they investigate the infamous “Enfield Hauntings.” Be warned: The sequel is merely influenced by the alleged poltergeist activity from 1977-1979.

The paranormal activity occurring in Enfield, UK transpired over a 2 year period. It involved a single mother, Peggy Hodgson, and two of her four children, Janet (age 11) and Johnny (age 10). On August 30, 1977, Janet and Johnny heard shuffling noises and saw the dresser slide across the floor. Thus began the UK’s most famous poltergeist story. The Enfield Poltergeist

The Enfield Poltergeist

The A & E Network featured the three-part mini-series The Enfield Haunting last year. The series performed quite well, opening with 750,000 U.K. viewers alone. It can been seen in the US, as well. It is a closer adaptation to published reports on what transpired back then and who was involved.

According to Guy Lyon Playfair of the Society for Psychical Research and who investigated the hauntings, the Warrens were not involved with the investigation and spent merely a day at the location. Not surprising. Hollywood likes to bend the truth.

Spooky Living Room

Strange lighting makes the living room appear spooky.

My House Moans

Winter weather brings about new sounds from my house. It moans. Actually, only one side moans, but it moans nonetheless. These seasonal noises are remarkably loud. One would think my house is haunted. But it’s not. Drat!

However, Archer Paranormal Investigations (API) has conducted a few investigations where the clients think their house is haunted only to find that it isn’t. In the movie The Conjuring Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate a young couple’s attic and discover that the “ghost” was a creaky floorboard. This is sometimes the case. Good paranormal investigators check it out. Period.

Back in the Victorian Age, the prevalence of gas lamps in the streets created the “Haunted House Syndrome.” Excessive exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) caused people, entire families even, to claim their house was haunted. These people experienced hallucinations which they believed were caused by paranormal activity.

Today skeptics attempt to debunk haunted house sounds by claiming over-exposure to different chemicals. And this may be the case. However, that is a generalization. One of the easiest, and safest, ways to debunk strange noises in your house is to purchase a carbon monoxide detector. In fact, you should buy one for each floor. Carbon monoxide is known as the “Invisible Killer” since it is colorless and odorless. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 150 in the United States die per year from accidental CO poisoning. Not only will it provide peace of mind, it may save your life.
