Paranormal News Week of April 23, 2018

#ParaNews for the Week of April 23, 2018

  1. A government agency “accidently” emailed documents regarding “Psycho-Electronic” weaponry to a journalist. This sounds like a horror/science fiction/conspiracy theory film; however, it seems legit. According to David Grossman of Popular Mechanics, journalist and frequent filer of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests Curtis Waltman asked for information about white supremacists and Antifa groups from the Washington State Fusion Center (WSFC). He received responses along with a few attached documents. The two below are samples of what Mr. Waltman received. The .ZIP file was titled “EM effects on human body.” Read the longer article here: Coming Soon.

  1. The University of West Georgia announced the inaugural Ingo Swann Research Fellowship. Paranormal researchers have until May 1st to apply for a partial residence research grant of $3,000. The grant requires an on-campus presentation, as well. For more information, read the article https://thehauntedlibrarian.com/2018/04/22/uwg-announces-1st-ingo-swann-research-fellowship/.
  2. Ash vs. Evil Dead wraps up on April 29th. The cult favorite series starring Bruce Campbell was cancelled last week by Starz, the premium cable channel and production company. Although the series saw viewership slide in the 3rd season, fans remain hopeful another streaming service will pick up. Mr. Campbell tweeted his thanks.

  1. The independent British horror film Ghost Stories (2017) ranked #1 for indie films this weekend by holding exclusive New York City screenings. The movie generated $12,646 this past weekend. Directors Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, who also stars, transformed the former West End play into a 90-minute full-length film. Watch for a review once I can legally view. [Note: Shame on the production company for announcing it was available to stream in the US when, in fact, it isn’t.]

The Thirteenth Club

Friday the 13th has a bad reputation. There are many theories on why people associate the day with bad news or bad omens. However, one person sought to change public perception: Captain William Fowler. Captain Fowler created The Thirteenth Club in an effort to remove the stigma attached to the date. His efforts seem to be made in vain—although, admittedly, he lived his life surrounded by the number.

Thirteen.Club_.Knickerbocker.Cottage3

The number 13 was prevalent in Captain Fowler’s life. For instance, consider the following:

  • He attended and graduated from Public School #13;
  • He was 13 years old when he finished school;
  • He was a builder whose company built 13 buildings;
  • His last day on a job was April 13, 1861;
  • He was a soldier in the Civil War and was in 13 battles;
  • He resigned his commission on August 13, 1863;
  • He purchased a pub on September 13, 1863. He would rename the establishment the Knickerbocker Cottage;
  • He sold the Knickerbocker Cottage on April 13, 1883;
  • He claimed to be associated with 13 secrets clubs. He was a 32nd degree Mason;
  • His name is the 13th listed on the roll of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine;
  • The Thirteenth Club had 13 original members;
  • The club’s first meeting was on September 13, 1881.
  • Finally, I write this blog on April 13, 2018. Could it be he had a stronger relationship with the date April 13th?

5 Best Stephen Hawking Quotes:

Professor Stephen Hawking (01.08.1942-03.14.2018) died at the age of 76 years old this past week. After earning his Ph.D. in 1965, Hawking went on to author many academic papers and books. He was a cosmologist armchair space traveler who enjoyed being lost in space. Although confined to a wheelchair since his ALS diagnosis in 1963, Hawking remained active and researching up until the end.

Below are 5 of his best quotes about the universe, extraterrestrial life, and the future of the human race. R.I.P. Professor. May your journey be filled with stars.

  1. “Hawking described Homer Simpson approvingly as a guy who ‘is always trying to get something for nothing.’ That’s the universe in a nutshell.”
  2. “I think the conventional afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark.”
  3. “I think the human race has no future if it doesn’t go into space. I, therefore, want to encourage public interest in space.”
  4. “I think it would be a disaster. The extraterrestrials would probably be far in advance of us. The history of advanced races meeting more primitive people on this planet is not very happy, and they were the same species. I think we should keep our heads low”
    • In Naked Science: Alien Contact, the National Geographic Channel, 2004
  5. “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate… Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded”

ParaNews for March 12, 2018

Paranormal News for the Week of March 12, 2018:

  • Media outlets seized on the Amelia Earhart disappearance by covering Dr. Richard Jantz’s overhyped article in Forensic Anthropology To be clear: Jantz does not proffer any new evidence or even support his theory that the infamous Nikumaroro Bones found in 1941 belong to the aviatrix. Read my blog titled “The Nikumaroro Bones Have Not Been Proven to be Amelia Earhart” detailing the serious flaws in his “research.”

  • The sequel in The Strangers franchise debuted on March 9th. The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) garnered poor reviews despite landing the talent of Christina Hendricks and Bailee Madison. The US gross totaled $10.4 million. Part 2 takes Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film The Strangers and places the unsuspecting family in a mobile home. Both were “based off a true story.” Unfortunately, it seems that it’s the same story—a fairly common one where kids reported strangers knocking on doors. Bertino also cited the Manson Family murders. Neither theme is supported in the scripts. The film is rated R and runs 85 minutes.

MichioKaku

  • My copy of Dr. Michio Kaku’s new book The Future of Humanity: Terraforming Mars, Interstellar Travel, Immortality, and Our Destiny Beyond arrived last week. Give me a few days to read; however, I will leave you with the alarm that Dr. Kaku recommends to humans interacting with extraterrestrials: RUN!

ESP Table

Paranormal News for the Week of March 5th, 2018

ParaNews:

  1. The paranormal community lost an important member last week when Dr. John “Doc” K. Head, co-founder of the paranormal investigation team ESP—Explorers of Spirit Phenomena unexpectedly died. Doc formed ESP in 2009 with a group of friends who possessed a genuine interest in the paranormal. Over the years, Doc and his team have made friends with experts in the community, as well as, those who have a part-time interest in knowing more. Please visit the ESP page, http://www.espexplorers.com/, to learn more about Doc. He will be missed. THL sends healing energy and loads of love to Terri and Tracy.

Dr.JKHead

  1. Jordan Peele made Oscar history—twice—last night by winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his hit movie Get Out (2017). It has taken 90 years for an African-American male to win in this category. However, more importantly, Peele won the Academy Award for a Horror film. This is the first time a screenwriter for a Horror film has taken home an Oscar. The Exorcist (1973) won in the category: Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium; The Silence of the Lambs (1991) won for Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published. Huge win for the Horror Genre! And also for Jordan!

  1. I will leave you with a teaser to a longer article I am writing. Theoretical physicist Rockstar Michio Kaku, Ph.D. has proffered an answer for when extraterrestrials land on earth. Dr. Kaku was asked what he suggested humans do if they encounter aliens. He said, “If you’re in the forest, do you go around talking to squirrel?” He likened humans to the squirrels. When aliens arrive, they will not be interested in meaningful conversations. No, Dr. Kaku warns, humans should “RUN!”

Longer article is forthcoming.

Lizzie Borden’s “Maplecroft” For Sale

Lizzie Borden’s Post-Acquittal home is for sale. “Maplecroft” was placed on the market for $849,900 in September. Failing to entice a buyer, the home has been reduced to $799,000. Although not as salacious as the “Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast,” Maplecroft holds insight into Lizzie’s life after she was acquitted for the murders of her father and stepmother.

Built for Charles Allen in 1889, Maplecroft is a classic Queen Anne Victorian single-family home. Boasting 8 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, the 3-story home has been partially renovated. Borden and her sister purchased the home in 1894. After her death on June 1, 1927, Borden was laid out in the parlor. The home has changed hands several, though not alarmingly numerous, times.

The current owner is in fact a company, Twilight Enterprises. One of the primary owners, Kristee Bates, initially envisioned turning the home into a bed and breakfast. That did not happen. Three years since acquisition, the company seeks to unload the nearly 4,000 square feet home.

InteriorHouse

Located at 306 French Street, Fall River, Massachusetts, the home is offered with all the furnishings.

The home has generated several stories; however, the house isn’t noted as having any paranormal activity. It appears to be a typical home in a quiet neighborhood. Indeed, it may be ideal for someone who is fascinated with Lizzie Borden but doesn’t want the paranormal baggage her tragic life carries.

Spirits of the Cage: True Accounts of Living in a Haunted Medieval Prison, Review

A witches’ prison exists in England. Actually lots of them existed. After the passage of two Witchcraft Acts (1542 and 1563), England saw a large spike in witchcraft trials in the 1580s. However, few prisons survived into modern times. One such prison did. The Cage is a small chamber whereupon a house was built—a private residence. Not surprisingly, it’s haunted.

Paranormal investigator Richard Estep recounts a week-long investigation at the infamous witches’ prison, The Cage, located in St. Osyth, Essex, England. Estep’s narrative follows in chronological order but is separated by personal experiences from the residence’s owner and co-author, Vanessa Mitchell. Illustrations accompany the 291 page book published this summer by Llewellyn Books.

TheCage

Estep’s prose is pippy as his narrative flows guiding the reader through his team’s selection, arrival, and ultimately their investigation. The 4-member team remains inside the prison-turned-residence for a week, venturing out for smoke breaks, showers, and pub food. They were able to document their investigation, and Estep’s book provides insight into their week.

Estep has over 22 years of experience investigating paranormal activity in England and the United States. He’s highly personable and adapts to any situation as he seems nonplussed by obstacles. His British euphemisms provide a nice reprieve from the seriousness of the investigation.

Paranormal investigations are boring. Most of the time, teams sit and wait. Estep details how creativity helped energize the investigation, as the team tried various techniques to entice the spirits to communicate. The investigation is fascinating. He defines equipment and procedures while narrating events.

The text, however, suffers from too many rhetorical questions, which slows the narrative. Providing little purpose, these questions disrupt the visualization of the events forcing the reader to disconnect from the text and then reconnect to contextualize the situation. It’s annoying.

Unfortunately, this is not a history book. Further, readers should not look toward this text for historical accuracy. And that’s a shame. The historical inaccuracies or vagueness of key events that occurred in St. Osyth and The Cage could have been cured by noting sources or utilizing a historian. Two errors stick out. The first is that St. Osyth, if a real person, did in fact marry the man she was bequeathed to and had a son[1] named Offa King of Essex. The second is that Ursula Kemp’s remains have an interesting provenance. Most recently, her presumed remains were reinterred in a sacred burial plot in April 2011[2]. Both should have been considered for inclusion as it would add credibility to the legends and create an emotional fallacy as to why readers should care about these two women.

BonesofUrsula

Though minor, the two errors diminish the owner’s story. Readers are left wondering how much she truly knows or researched about the popular haunted destination. Mitchell still owns the property, although it remains listed for sale. She wisely opines: “I feel lucky to have escaped….”

Buy the book, though. Estep concludes the book by interviewing other teams and individuals who felt the urge to investigate The Cage. Their voices add to the narrative. But buy the book because very few investigations are published. The paranormal community benefits from these publications.

Is Pet Sematary Getting a Reboot?

Talk has circulated since 2015 of a possible reboot to the cult-classic Pet Sematary (1989). The original generated $57 million in US ticket sales with another $26.4 million in rentals. It was profitable; however, some felt the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel lacked horror luster. Enter Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Fresnadillo co-wrote and directed 28 Days Later (2007), a horror/sci-fi hybrid. He was attached to the reboot in 2015 and remained with the project until 2017. Reports of character casting spread in 2016, with the hopes of getting “the best of the best.” However, IMDb.com does not even list a reboot/sequel/adaptation. Therefore, fans were on hold thinking that the project has been shelved … until last week.

It

Buzz about a reboot began last week. New Line Cinemas is releasing It (2017), another insanely popular Stephen King adaptation, on September 8th. Director Andrés (Andy) Muschietti is finalizing the first installment and is committed to the sequel, set to begin production in 2018. However, he has been dropping large hints—huge hints—that he would love to tackle Pet Sematary. His selling point: “We are true fans of [Stephen King’s] work.” Cross your fingers and your toes, Pet Sematary may get an upgrade. Stay tuned.
