The Miniaturist Enthralls

“Every woman is the architect of her own fortune.”

The new 3-part mini-series, The Miniaturist, airing on PBS delves into 17th century life in Amsterdam. Based on Jessie Burton’s book by the same title, the mini-series is based on a real married couple and a bizarre wedding present: a cabinet house.

Cabinet houses were displayed in many seventeenth Amsterdam houses serving 2 purposes: status symbols denoting extreme wealthy and privilege. A cabinet house was a miniature replica of a home consisting of a large hutch sectioning off rooms. They were expensive showpieces and incredibly popular; they were not toys. The cabinet house led to the modern-day dollhouse.

Real Cabinet House
Real House

The inspiration for the novel exists and is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Johannes Brandt, a Dutch merchant, gifted his wife Petronella “Nella” Oortman an expensive cabinet house upon her arrival in Amsterdam. Nella spent the equivalent of $2 million Euros over 5 years filling up the house with trinkets, furniture, and people. It is exquisite!

Author Burton proclaimed, “[seeing the doll house] really started in my imagination this concept of the domestic world.” She constructed her novel highlighting the marginalized misfits within society. Although the story revolves around the true owners of a cabinet house displayed in the Rijksmuseum, the story is pure fiction.

The television cabinet house reflects the coldness of the physical house and the characters living within. The British production company crafted a cabinet house to match the home used in the series. However, not everything is as it appears. A mystery surrounds the Miniaturist, played by Emily Berrington, and how she knows so much about the house, objects, and people associated with the dwelling.

The PBS series is a refreshing addition to the line-up of British productions airing.

5 Things I Learned While Binging Supernatural

The hit TV show Supernatural is heading into the home stretch. After 13 successful seasons, the show will end with a partial Season 14, on its 300th episode. It secured the title of longest running science fiction TV show in television history seasons ago. Further, its fan base seems strong and steady. According to the Executive Producer Robert Singer, the time just felt right. While binging the show, I learned 5 important things.

  1. Motels are better on TV. Sam and Dean Winchester stay at some kitsch motels. The demon hunting brothers have one rule when separated: Locate the first motel listed in the Yellow Pages and check in. Some of the motels would rival the best boutique hotels which charge substantially more. There are lots of Pinterest pages showcasing the motels and the insanely clever décor.

ManyMotelRooms

  1. Dean’s beloved 1967 Chevy Impala is too tinny sounding for me. I think I would slide right off the polished leather and onto the floor, too—not to mention it is entirely too clean for me. The Impala was not the initial choice in for the pilot episode; however, the writer reconsidered after learning that the Impala’s trunk was large enough to hold a body. The show has 9 cars. The predominantly used one is called the “Hero 1 Impala.” BTW, there have been 2 license plates. The first one was a Kansas tag “KAZ 2Y5.” It was replaced with an Ohio tag, “CNK 80Q3,” on the 20th episode of Season 2.

Impala

  1. I cannot visit the locations on an epic cross-country American road trip. The series is filmed predominantly in Vancouver, BC. However, I will be able to visit “The Rosemary” 1915 Tudor Revival house in the near future. The house served as the “Pierpont Inn” in the “Playthings” episode. The massive home (all 16,000 square feet) fell into disrepair and sold in 2013 for over $12 million Canadian dollars. The new owner, Mingfei Zhao, retired to Vancouver for the clean air. He has invested over $6 million in rehabbing the home. Once completed, the home will be open for fundraisers to aid the rehabilitation of other historic properties.

TudorRevival

  1. The show felt a little too X-Files-ish. Kim Manners, producer and director, worked on another popular science fiction TV show: The X-Files. He came to the production and directed 17 episodes before dying in 2009 from lung cancer.

X-Files crossover

  1. Who doesn’t love the song “Carry on Wayward Son” (1976)? Apparently, Netflix. The series is able to broadcast the Kansas anthem (the band and not the state) when the show airs on the CW; however, due to licensing, the song is not included on the streaming episodes on Netflix. But I can dig it. There are plenty of other groovy songs in the episodes.

Music That Leaves Viewers Haunted

Last year the highly anticipated British TV crime show, Prime Suspects 1973 (a.k.a. Prime Suspect Tennison), premiered with a 6-episode season. Based on Lynda La Plante’s book, the show goes back to 1973 when Jane Tennison (played by Stefanie Martini) joins the police force. It is the prequel to Helen Mirren’s older and much wiser Jane Tennison in the 1991 series Prime Suspects. The new series filled in backstory while showing Tennison’s early transition from upper middle-class family lifestyle to police rookie. It’s enjoyable. Further, the soundtrack nails it. The songs were chosen for the scenes and encompass a wide range of artists. Ultimately, the final song in the series leaves a haunting impression.

In an effort not to provide any spoilers, the discussion is vague; however, re-watch the series and see how important this selection is. The scene is somber. Martini’s Tennison learns a tough lesson that gives her the strength to persevere on the force. But first, viewers must sit through Joni Mitchell’s iconic “Woodstock.”

Even though Mitchell’s song is iconic and a classic, not much is written about its meaning. There is some speculation but nothing concrete. Mitchell did not attend Woodstock. Instead, she took her manager’s advice and appeared on The Dick Cavett Show, an entertainment/variety show that was popular at the time. Mitchell’s boyfriend at the time was Graham Nash, of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He told Mitchell about the huge music festival. Mitchell envisioned how it felt and wrote the song. It’s incredibly haunting. Memorizing. Watch her performance from 1970: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aOGnVKWbwc.

“We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.”

Finding the perfect song for a scene is difficult. Having that song transcend the scene and encompass the production is rare. Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” does just that in Prime Suspects 1973. Check it out. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

Strange Evidence Strives to Answer Mysteries

Science Channel’s new TV show Strange Evidence has experts from around the globe attempting to explain strange phenomena caught on video. The TV-PG 10-episode season 1 debuted on October 17, 2017. Although viewers rate it 4.2 stars on IMDb.com, the show is okay. It meshes the best from Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files starring Ben Hanson. Both shows examine video to solve what seems unexplainable. Unlike Fact or Faked, Strange Evidence interviews experts and foregoes the panel of assemble actors. The show covers a wide range of topics. Watch episodes at https://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-shows/strange-evidence/.

Dark: Binge-Worthy

Netflix’s first German TV series is a hypnotizing tale of time travel drawing comparisons to Twin Peaks and Stranger Things. It’s neither. Dark stands on its own and is binge-worthy.

Winden is the small town everyone is eager to leave but ultimately pre-ordained to remain. The 10-episode Season 1 tracks four families spanning three generations interconnected by the disappearance of 2 boys. Shot entirely in German, the US version is dubbed in English. The dubbing is not distracting—unless you prefer to lip-read.

The large ensemble cast may be hard to follow. The New York Times boasted the series was “constructed with the aid of spreadsheets.” And you may need to plot out the characters as some appear in three separate time periods: 1953, 1986, and 2019. Personally, I watched the first episode three times to get a firm grasp of the characters.

According to several reviews, the top billed star is Oliver Masucci playing Police Officer Ulrich Nielson in 2019. However, the central character is Jonas Kahnwald, played by Louis Hofmann, a teenager haunted by his father’s suicide. His journey and isolation drives the plot.

Cemetary

Time travel is the essence of the series. Co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the series contemplates how the future affects the past. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s not the past driving the future but the future driving the past. The question to be answered is not when but where. Mr. Odar and Ms. Friese deliver a dark (hence the title) atmospheric mystery. IMDb.com classifies the series as a crime drama. I disagree. It’s a science fiction mystery.

The series is more than the initial question. The answer comes mid-season. The writers set up Season 2 unlike Stranger Things, which dropped a continuation teaser at the very end. Don’t let the language barrier hold you back from viewing. Netflix wisely entered the international marketplace. Stick with the show. You, too, will be left pondering time travel and the future.

#10: Stranger Things, Season 2

Nearly 16 million people tuned into Season 2 of Stranger Things. Further, Nielsen’s Ratings Service estimates that 361,000 Netflix subscribers binged the entire season on the first day of its release, October 27th. Season 2 delivers new horrors and is everything fans expect.

The 9-episode second season captures the essence of 1984, from the video arcade to trick-or-treating. However, a new evil lurks within the small community of Hawkins, Indiana.

No worries—no spoilers here. Just the announcement that the Duffer Brothers, creators of the immensely popular series, have confirmed that Season 3 will be released at the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019. Seems too long to wait!

Binge Season 1 of The Exorcist (2016)

Season 2 of the critically acclaimed TV series The Exorcist started last week on FOX. Catch up on the first season now streaming on Hulu. Originally slated to be a full-length motion picture reboot of the classic 1973 film, the TV series is a continuation of the storyline.

Alfonso

Starring Alfonso Herrera as Father Tomas, a Chicago-born but Mexican-raised Catholic priest of a declining inner-city parish, and Ben Daniels, as the excommunicated former-Father Marcos who has a long career of exorcising demons, the 10-episode season 1 follows them as they attempt to assist Angela (played by Geena Davis) and Henry (played by Alan Ruck) Rance with their possessed daughter. However, the season is more than one storyline. It interweaves references to the 1973 award winning film, most notably the iconic song, “Tubular Bells,” which has a cameo.

Catch up on season 1 before watching season 2. It’s worth it.

Ghosts, Aliens, and Bigfoot: Rob Lowe Believes

Quintessential 80s heartthrob has a new mission in life: To Believe. The Lowe Files debuts on A&E on August 2nd. The show features Rob Lowe and his two adult sons, Matthew and John Owen, as they search for the unknown. According to the Huffington Post article, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/rob-lowe-bigfoot_us_595333bce4b0da2c731f9140, they may have found something.

Rob Lowe enters the paranormal reality TV market at a good time. Perennial favorites like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures have run their course. Ghost Hunters ended its run after 11 seasons last year, while Ghost Adventures is still airing new episodes; however, lead investigator Zak Bagans has segued his career into several spin-offs, most recently Ghost Adventures: Aftershocks. Other fan favorites like The Dead Files have shortened seasons to maximize viewership. Ghost Brothers entered its sophomore season investigating the over-exposed locations seen on Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures. It’s time for a new angle.

Enter Rob Lowe.

Lowe erupted onto the cinema screen in 1983 as “Sodapop Curtis” in the S.E. Hinton adaptation The Outsiders. Although he was already working in television, Lowe found success with teen favorites Oxford Blues and St. Elmo’s Fire. His career has come full-circle as he has been steadily employed in the television industry since 1994. Now he is trying his hand at reality TV. He is joined by his sons in the 9 episode season run. Episode one features the trio at the haunted Preston Castle, former reformatory school located in Ione, California. The season finale questions the existence of a North American wood ape, the Ozark equivalent of Bigfoot. Tune into A&E at 10 PM Wednesday, August 2nd. Hopefully, Lowe will find new locations and fresh content. Otherwise, he may not make it to season 2.

Ghost Brothers Back on Destination America

Looking for new episodes from a paranormal series? Tune in to Destination America at 10 PM EST for new episodes of Ghost Brothers. Season 1 premiered on DA in 2016. Ratings were strong; therefore, it relocated to TLC (formerly known as The Learning Channel). However, it quickly returned to DA. The show follows three friends as they explore haunted locations. Season 1 locations were the typical over-exposed ones nearly every show explores. Unfortunately, Season 2 offers the same. Most of the locations are the ones from Ghost Adventurers. This is disappointing.

But it is summertime and the paranormal show offerings are slim. Check your local cable listings for Destination America. It is only available in certain markets. Certain episodes are also available by streaming directly from DA. Destination America has not committed to a third season. If you enjoy the show, start binging.
