John Zaffis Recovering after Surgery

The Godfather of paranormal research, John Zaffis, underwent surgery to unblock an artery. The artery was 90% blocked and required the placement of a stent. Zaffis was jovial in a recent Facebook post stating,

My wife had to put up that posting so very fast, never in a million years did I think I was going to have to be concerned with so many people knowing me in the emergency room and they started texting and posting so I told my wife to post something so our family and friends did not see something that was incorrect in a posting, we all know how that go’s. But I am home now and doing good, thank you all for all the prayers and positive energy.

Zaffis is very well-known in the paranormal community and has gained a new following from his hit TV show Haunted Collector (2011-2013). The show featured Zaffis and his team investigating paranormal activity, oftentimes identifying the source attached to an object. Zaffis collects the objects and houses them at the John Zaffis Paranormal Museum, which opened in 2004. I blogged on February 6, 2015, https://thehauntedlibrarian.com/2015/02/09/zaffis-may-purchase-former-funeral-home-for-museum/, that Zaffis is finalizing plans to relocate the museum to a former funeral home. The property would contain a gallery and conference space for special workshops. To my knowledge, this project is still moving forward.

Zaffis, nephew of Ed and Lorraine Warren, is a respected Demonologist and has consulted and investigated thousands of cases. Further, he has appeared on several TV shows and makes frequent conference appearances. Most notably, he is one of the sweetest people working in the industry. Zaffis May Purchase Former Funeral Home for Museum

Last year at Scarefest, John Zaffis told me that he might purchase a former funeral home and relocate his museum of all things haunted. Seems Zaffis may have identified the perfect location: the former McBride Funeral Home. Zaffis claims the building has the proper “creepy edge” required to draw in visitors.

According to an article in The Berkshire Eagle Newspaper (Adams, Massachusetts), Zaffis toured the vacant building with an architect and the town building inspector. But don’t plan a visit anytime soon. If Zaffis does make an offer, it will be several months before the museum would be operational.

Offered at $79,000, the funeral home consists of two separate buildings connected by a common entryway. Both buildings feature a large meeting room on the first floor. An apartment is on the second floor of one building. Zoning has already been changed from residential to commercial. Zaffis doesn’t anticipate a large-scale renovation. In fact, he states that the buildings are almost ideal for what he has envisioned.

Zaffis’ plans include utilizing one meeting room for paranormal lectures. The other large meeting room would house 20 of his largest items with a rotating exhibit of smaller pieces. He would stay in the apartment while in town. The additional upstairs space would be used for storage.

Zaffis started the Paranormal and Demonology Research Society of New England in 1998. He starred in the paranormal hit TV show The Haunted Collector. In addition, Zaffis appears at paranormal conferences throughout the year.

Zaffis spotted the abandoned funeral home and felt it was creepy enough to house a paranormal collection. If realized, the museum would be open on Fridays and Saturdays by appointment only. Zaffis’ collection is extensive and large. A collection fit for a funeral home!

Scarefest Newbie

I’m a Scarefest newbie attending the annual Horror/Paranormal Convention in Lexington, Kentucky, September 12-14 for the first time. It is the largest horror and paranormal conference in the South. The venue was amazing and convenient.

The Platinum Package was well worth it. I saw Jake Busey and Corey Feldman before it all started.

Crowds were small on Friday. I browsed the 200+ vendor booths, chatted up my favorite paranormal people, and made the following observations:

  • Wes Forsythe is the hardest working radio broadcaster in the business. He’s also the most gracious and helpful.
  • Live Paranormal’s Rob Szarek is drumming up interviews and business to expand the paranormal radio market.
  • Dustin Pari really does believe in God. He walks the talk. He is Mr. Congeniality by being incredibly sweet and supportive.

  • Amy Bruni and Adam Berry are the cutest non-couple coupled in the paranormal industry.

  • Amy Allen is for real. I doubt her skeptics have ever heard her publically speak.
  • Amy Allan

  • John Zaffis is friendly at his booth, in his sessions, and at the elevators. Very professional and accessible. Visit him at his new museum. Worth the drive.
  • Chris Lindberg and John E.L. Tenney are enjoying the Ghost Stalker ride, Coachman RV and all. Good for them!
  • Ghost Stalkers

  • The Booth Brothers had the best movie prop: an antique Victorian camera complete with a beautifully crafted base. Their new film Dead Still premieres on SyFy on October 6th at 9 pm EST.

I spent Saturday shuttling from one session to another. Thankfully, I held a Platinum Pass, allowing me to by-pass most long lines.

By Sunday I was exhausted. I was unable to attend every session. That’s why I’ll be back next year. For more information visit the Official Scarefest Website, www.Scarefestcon.com.
