Ghost Stalkers

Ghost Stalkers

RIP Ghost Stalkers

Word on the street is that Ghost Stalkers will not be returning on Destination America. The show, starring John E.L. Tenney and Chad Lindberg, was divisive. The cancellation by non-renewal was not for lack of effort. John and Chad reached out to their fans and held live twitter sessions for every episode. Others involved with the production followed suit. Unfortunately it was not enough to persuade Discovery Communications, owners of Destination America, to pick up Season 2. While neither John nor Nick Groff, Executive Producer, responded to instant messages seeking confirmation, their silence may in fact answered the question.

While I enjoyed the show, I am aware that some people cringed at Chad’s zealous cries of fear. Looking beyond that, the show contained innovative equipment and technology designed to locate portals. John balanced out Chad’s excitability with insightful commentary. In addition, the locations were unique and not the same-old-same-old locations pervasive on other paranormal shows. I will miss Ghost Stalkers. Fingers crossed that one of Discovery Communications many other channels may be interested.

Finally—Hawkinsville State Hospital

Tomorrow Archer Paranormal Investigations, API, travels to Hawkinsville, Georgia to investigate the Old Hawkinsville State Hospital, also known as Taylor Memorial Hospital (http://www.theoldhawkinsvillehospital.com/). This marks my first public investigation, where people have paid to participate in an investigation. In addition to the API Gals, we will be investigating with some of our former clients and friends. I am beyond excited!

I first learned of the OHSH from an episode of Ghost Stalkers (2014), Season 1, Episode 3, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4193834/?ref_=ttep_ep3. John Tenney and Chad Lindberg collected some extremely compelling evidence. Therefore, my expectations are high. Actually, the mere opportunity for investigating in an incredibly old and defunct hospital meets that high expectation. I’m not sure what I will do if we collect any evidence. A few choice phrases come to mind, but, hey, this is a PG-13 blog.

Seekers of Spirits (SOS) Ghost Hunters, http://www.sosghosthunters.com/, have exclusive permission from the owners to conduct tours and hold investigations. This paranormal group is working to preserve the hospital, as well as, the incredible and sometimes tragic history of the hospital. I respect this group and look forward to meeting them. In addition, I applaud their strict enforcement against Ouija Boards, séances, and rituals. Personally, I am against the use of such items. Moreover, I find that most people who use these items often abuse them.

I am off to pack, charge batteries, and collect items that I usually don’t bring on investigations (i.e., lawn chairs, surplus extension cords, and snacks).

Look for an update next week. I will be posting pictures and more.

Investigate with Nick Groff

Since leaving Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, Nick Groff has diversified and started touring. Nick is the Executive Producer and Creator of Destination America’s freshman paranormal offering Ghost Stalkers. The series ended its 6 episode run in November. Still no word on whether the show was picked up for a second season. But Nick is not resting on his laurels. NickGroffTour.com debuted online almost simultaneously as Travel Channel announced his departure.

Two locations are currently scheduled. On February 8, 2015, Nick will be investigating at the infamous Bobby Mackey’s Music World, in Wilder, Kentucky. Ticket sales are brisk. The only remaining options are general admission for $30 or the VIP ticket for $325. The VIP package is truly a celebrity ghost hunting experience. There will be lots of face time with Nick, a full-fledged investigation, plus a bunch of photo opportunities. The general ticket gets you into the Q&A sessions and a photo. There’s a wide range on these prices, so carefully weigh your options.

The second investigation will be held at the Ashmore Estates in Illinois. More ticket options are still available for the April 11, 2015, investigation. View www.nickgrofftour.com for more information as more locations will be added.

Public group tours are popular. Fans yearn for personal investigative experiences with paranormal celebrities. Face time is paramount, and people will pay. Ask Amy Bruni who has also started her own touring company called Strange Escapes, www.strange-escapes.com.

Small group investigations differ from conference sessions. Attendees can see how a paranormal investigator reacts in the field. Numbers are low, so that fewer people can have full access. Evidence is not guaranteed. However, I would venture to guess that the ability to walk side by side, shoulder to shoulder with a celebrity ghost hunter far outweighs the occasional anomalies.

Only adults age 18+ are able to participate in the investigations. However, children may attend the Q&A sessions.

Locations for Nick’s events are more well-known and supposedly haunted. Advertising claims “iconic haunted locations in America.” Seems Nick is off to a good start. Once he gets closer to the Greater Atlanta area, I will venture out and join in on the craze.

Ghost Adventures Nick Groff

Nick Groff Exits Ghost Adventures

Twitter exploded when the Travel Channel posted a “good-bye” tweet thanking Ghost Adventures (GAC) co-founder Nick Groff. Nick quickly sent out a follow-up tweet reaffirming the news that he had in fact left the insanely popular GAC show. As a true professional, Nick remained positive and respectful. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the other co-founder Zak Bagans.

Change is inevitable. Change moves at light speed in the reality television realm. Every TV show has a natural lifespan. And they differ. But in the end, all TV shows end. Realizing this, a savvy TV celebrity recreates and rebrands himself to remain relevant. Madonna comes to mind. She’s a pro at it. Zak Bagans did it by developing Ghost Adventures: Aftershocks, where he profiles some of the GAC’s more exciting investigations. Now it’s Nick’s turn.

Nick’s brainchild is Ghost Stalkers (GS), starring John E.L. Tenney and Chad Lindberg. John, the seasoned researcher, and Chad, the para-newbie, travel the U.S. in a Coachmen RV and investigate low-media profiled locations. Paranormal inventor David Rountree creates new instruments to assist in the investigations. Investigations cover 2 days with each taking a turn locked inside. John and Chad are incredibly likeable and sincere. GS has breathed a breath of fresh air into the paranormal reality TV biz. Last week GS ended its freshman season consisting of 6 episodes. Fans await news of a second season. Hint, hint Destination America.

The paranormal community took to twitter for comments from all affected. The GS base posted highly favorable comments and kept it positive. The GAC side was silent. Crickets could be heard from the lack of interest from Mr. Baggans, who focused on himself and the new season starting in January. Pressed for any comment, Mr. Bagans said:

  1. many of you have been asking…Nick is no longer with Ghost Adventures. Right now Im focused on the new season premiering Jan 10th 2015
  2. I’d also like to make an announcement……
  3. I’m pleased to announce that season 10 returns January 10th with the most-anticipated episode ever… the BELL WITCH CAVE #GhostAdventures
  4. and not to mention the next episode after BELL WITCH CAVE is the SALLIE HOUSE …oh yes, get ready!!!!

Well, this was disappointing…not unexpected…but very disappointing. Similar to the supposed rift between Jason Hawes and Amy Bruni from Ghost Hunters, this intentional diss from Bagans is abysmal to the paranormal community. Viewers do not care about the contractual obligations of paranormal reality TV people. Dishing on dirty laundry, however, diminishes the hard work others, TV and non-TV people alike, put into the field.

In short: Man up, Zak, and thank your “friend” and wish him well. Acknowledge his leaving in a professional manner. Set an example to your fans who follow ALL of you.

Update: Approximately 4 hours after the announcement and 15 minutes after posting this article, Mr. Bagans posted: I do wish Nick the best w his future while I continue to deliver GAC fans what they want. #GhostAdventures.

Here’s hoping that Nick will fill his time with new episodes of Ghost Stalkers. Ghost Stalkers ended its freshman 6 episode season last week. No word on whether the highly popular show starring John E.L. Tenney and Chad Lindberg will return.

Scarefest Newbie

I’m a Scarefest newbie attending the annual Horror/Paranormal Convention in Lexington, Kentucky, September 12-14 for the first time. It is the largest horror and paranormal conference in the South. The venue was amazing and convenient.

The Platinum Package was well worth it. I saw Jake Busey and Corey Feldman before it all started.

Crowds were small on Friday. I browsed the 200+ vendor booths, chatted up my favorite paranormal people, and made the following observations:

  • Wes Forsythe is the hardest working radio broadcaster in the business. He’s also the most gracious and helpful.
  • Live Paranormal’s Rob Szarek is drumming up interviews and business to expand the paranormal radio market.
  • Dustin Pari really does believe in God. He walks the talk. He is Mr. Congeniality by being incredibly sweet and supportive.
  • Dustin Pari

  • Amy Bruni and Adam Berry are the cutest non-couple coupled in the paranormal industry.

  • Amy Allen is for real. I doubt her skeptics have ever heard her publically speak.
  • Amy Allan

  • John Zaffis is friendly at his booth, in his sessions, and at the elevators. Very professional and accessible. Visit him at his new museum. Worth the drive.
  • Chris Lindberg and John E.L. Tenney are enjoying the Ghost Stalker ride, Coachman RV and all. Good for them!
  • Ghost Stalkers

  • The Booth Brothers had the best movie prop: an antique Victorian camera complete with a beautifully crafted base. Their new film Dead Still premieres on SyFy on October 6th at 9 pm EST.

I spent Saturday shuttling from one session to another. Thankfully, I held a Platinum Pass, allowing me to by-pass most long lines.

By Sunday I was exhausted. I was unable to attend every session. That’s why I’ll be back next year. For more information visit the Official Scarefest Website, www.Scarefestcon.com.

Chad’s the “Man” for Ghost Stalker Premiere

Ghost Stalkers

Chad’s the “Man” for Ghost Stalker Premiere

Scarefest 2014 attendees screened the pilot episode of Ghost Stalkers, starring Chad Lindberg and John E.L. Tenney. Produced by Ghost Adventurer’s Nick Groff, Ghost Stalkers follows Chad and John as they tool around in a Coachman RV and investigate six highly active haunted locations. The “Whispers Estate” was profiled in the first episode.

Built around 1894, the “Whispers Estate” was originally owned by Dr. George and Sarah White. They sold the 3-story Victorian house to Dr. John and Jessie Gibbons, who adopted orphaned children. One child was Rachael. At age 10, Rachael started a fire in the first-floor parlor. Badly burned, she died within a few days. Other family members died in the house. Paranormal investigators believe some are still attached and haunt the house.

The current owner, Vann, rents the house out for paranormal investigations. The caretaker, Gwen Zeigler, has a profound attachment to the property. Both believe that a vortex exists in the parlor.

The 30 minute preview consisted of Chad’s lockdown in the house. Both Chad and John spend a night at the location while the other monitors the cameras from inside the RV. Although neither stated how each episode concludes, I would image that there is some sort of evidence review incorporated into the show.

At this location, Chad experiences strange anomalies prior to his lockdown and during. He hears disembodied voices and footsteps. He even captures an EVP recording. At one point Chad begins to breakdown and to question his ability to complete the lockdown. Chad replays the digital voice recorder and hears “Chad…Be a man.” With that challenge, Chad finds his courage and proceeds.

Chad’s compromised emotional state is refreshing. His fear is real. Yes, I know he is a paid actor; however, his inability to control his voice and shaking hand earns my respect. When the “shit got real,” Chad reacted. [Note: See “Chip Coffey is not the Western Union of the Dead” for context.]

Equally real is the bat that appears out of nowhere. After filming, both inquired about the bat. According to Vann, no one has ever witnessed a bat in the house before. [Teaser: Seems a bat appears in all 6 episodes AND Chad’s favorite superhero is Batman. Interesting.]

Chad was respectful during his lockdown announcing, “I come out of love and respect.” I look forward to screening the entire episode. My early assessment is positive. I hope Chad and John break new ground. The 6 episode season highlights locations that have not been overexposed by other TV shows. This remains to be seen. Although John remained tightlipped, he did offer a teaser: former Maryland mental facility. Tune in, set your TiVo or DVR, or watch On Demand on October 19th at 10 pm EST for Ghost Stalkers, Destination America’s latest paranormal offering.
