Lady in Black

There are numerous reports of a “Lady in Black” appearing at the monument. The story is heartbreaking:

Miss Lucy Gartell was known around Marietta for wearing the deepest black dresses, a man’s Fedora, and a fur coat all year long. She mourned the loss of her sister Mary Annie (d. 1906), whom she called “Ank.” Every May Lucy would walk to Ank’s gravesite carrying flowers. Miss Lucy died on March 11, 1954 at a Baker Street rooming house. Her death certificate listed her age as “approximately 78 years old.”

Records show that Miss Lucy was delivered to Mayes-Ward Funeral Home, Marietta; however, there is no record of a burial.

The white marble monument is 15′ high and topped with a 5′ angel bearing a garland of flowers.
